He sang, "The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place for safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence."

-2 Samuel 22:2-3 (NLT)

David sang these words to God, after the Lord delivered him from Saul and his other enemies. This passage can also be found in Psalm 18.

The thing I've always loved about David is how he processed life through song. When I was in middle school and an emotional wreck, I would write songs as prayers to God to help me get through life and sort out my thoughts. David's certainly not a middle school girl, but I think he wrote for similar reasons.

If anyone knew what God's protection was like, it was David. When he was a shepherd, he killed a bear and a lion with his bare hands. He fought against the giant Goliath with a sling and stones, when no one else in Israel was willing to. David was hired to play the harp for Saul to comfort him, and God protected David when Saul attempted to kill him in the middle of his music therapy. Even when Saul put forth his craziest attempts to murder David, God protected him.

Lately, I've been re-watching the show Monk. He's an OCD detective who's brilliant, funny, and my personal germaphobe hero :)

There are certain things Monk does because of his OCD tendencies, like touching poles. One episode he missed a pole and went back to touch it, barely missing the car trying to run him over. In another episode, Monk was analyzing a crime and dropped his wipe. He bent down to pick it up, and was thankfully right below the gunshots aimed at him.

Monk's protection came from luck and OCD timing, but David's protection came straight from the Lord. God had probably allowed David to kill the lion and bear so it would prepare him to face Goliath. No matter how hopeless life seemed, God was always with David, the man after His own heart.

What does God's protection look like in your own life? When troubles come, do you turn to God?

This is something I need to work on. I like to be self-reliant and take matters into my own hands, but it never works out well.

God is so strong and wants us to depend on Him. Nothing is too big for Him and He is always willing to be our refuge.
