"When your days are fulfilled to walk with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you, but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever."
-1 Chronicles 17:11-14 (NLT)

1 Chronicles starts off with an extended genealogy. Most people find them boring, but I've always found them fascinating. I volunteer at a history museum and people come in all the time wanting to know about their relatives that used to live in town.
For the Israelites, 1 and 2 Chronicles were their archives. The inspiration for today's post came from GotQuestions.org and they said that these books record Israel's history from Adam and Eve to the Babylonian captivity. That's a long time and the Israelites were blessed with rich reminders of their heritage.
Today's passage is referred to as the Davidic Covenant. Just as God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations, God promised David an eternal heir.
At first, the promise is regarding Solomon. He was the son that would build God's temple and from his line, Jesus would come.
Jesus, however, is the ultimate heir of David. His throne will endure forever. When Jesus returns, He will establish God's kingdom with a new heaven and a new earth.
This verse is a reminder that God is faithful to keep promises. Throughout the Bible, God never once let His people down. Sometimes it took a while for an answer, but it always came. Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born. Israel became an official nation many years later. God promised to send a Messiah in Genesis 3:15 and Jesus came about 4,000 or more years later.
God's timing doesn't usually align with what we think is best, but His ways are perfect. We can trust what God says because He never fails to keep His promises.
